What We Know About the President’s Executive Order to Advance Artificial Intelligence in Education

This infographic highlights the key aspects of the President’s executive order on Advancing Artificial Intelligence Education for American Youth. This executive order does a great job of focusing on some actionable steps that could move our country towards being a global leader in AI technology. The following are some stand out sections of the order to be aware of:

  • Section One of the order establishes some background information about the importance of AI and lays out the goal of the executive order, which is to ensure that the United States is at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence technology.

  • Section Five introduces the Presidential Artificial Intelligence Challenge. This is a particularly promising aspect of the executive order because of the high probability of participation due to the competitive nature of it. While all of the details of the challenge have yet to be released, we do know that there will be multiple age, geographic, and theme categories. It seems that the challenge will focus on creating AI based solutions to challenges within our country and promoting adoption of AI technologies.

  • Section Seven focuses on providing professional development opportunities for educators. There was mention of training for foundational computer science and artificial intelligence as well as how to incorporate these concepts into other subject areas. Also, an emphasis on providing training for integrating AI tools into classrooms was included.

  • Section Eight covers the promotion of registered apprenticeships in AI related occupations. This section aims to increase these opportunities and provide grants for apprenticeship programs. Additionally, the order encourages the establishment of skills and work-based training and certification coursework.

This is indeed an exciting time for educators that are interested in preparing our students for a world where computer science and artificial intelligence skills will be in demand.
